Tips for before, during and after a State Exam

What to do the night before an exam

  • Check the times of exams the next day - don’t assume or guess!

  • Pack your bag and pencil case carefully; gather your pens, pencils, eraser, maths sets, calculator, coloured pencils, and markers.

  • Don’t forget you can’t ask for these during the exam.

  • Make sure to write in blue and black pens only: make sure you have these and spare pens packed.

  • Go back over what your teachers told you with regards to layout of the paper and timing. When you go in the next day, you should know how many questions you must do on each paper and allow time for each one.

What to do on the day of the exam

  • Be organised: get up on time, give yourself plenty of time to eat breakfast, and get to school before 9am

  • Wear your uniform, clothing should not be a distraction!

  • Calm yourself before you begin - breathe!

  • Focus: try to see the exam as a chance for you to prove what you know.

  • Be smart: remember your exam paper has thousands of words on it which can give you clues, such as the right spellings to use for answers throughout the exam: use it to your advantage!

What to do during the exam

At the start of the exam:

  • Read the questions with your pen in your hand and underline key things you must answer

  • Present information well to maximise your grades - presentation is key.

When answering questions:

  • Read and check back over the question again to make sure you are answering exactly what is asked

  • Remember to use diagrams in subjects where they are either required (such as on the Geography paper) or to add context to your answer

  • Read back over your answers when you finish a section

  • Stay the distance: each exam is timed for a reason, so don’t leave early.

If you have spare time:

  • Do an extra question; remember, all material must be corrected by the examiner

  • Keep writing; you are permitted to extend and develop your answers by indicating on the paper what the extra information relates to (such as by writing “extra information for question 2”).

If you are running out of time:

  • Make a list of the remainder points you would include in an answer if you don’t have time to finish it in full

  • List the points you would make if you are short an answer to a question: a few points are better than nothing.

What to do after the exam:

  • Stay on track. Try to not to discuss the exam paper with your fellow students: you are all different and comparing could lead to upset and could distract you from your next paper.

  • Get something to eat and enjoy some fresh air.

  • Go into quiet room and relax for the afternoon exam.

  • Enjoy a good break in the evening. Try and refocus by getting some fresh air or exercise and then move your focus on the following day’s exams.

Matthew Brownie from the Skibbereen Food Company Visits SCS

Sincere thank you to Matthew Brownie of the Skibbereen Food Company who took the time to visit Skibbereen Community School last week to speak to Transition Year Food & Hospitality & Mini Company students.

Matthew gave a very informative talk; how he worked as a professional chef in several restaurants, in many countries, from New Zealand, across Europe & Ireland.

He explained how the idea for Scratch my Pork was born in 2013, to the establishment of a very successful company with an ever-growing selection of tasty & tempting snacks.

In 2022 he won mini–Snack Company of the Year. Matthew Brownie also won the Best Small Business award in 2023. The Skibbereen Food Company has very quickly grown from strength to strength.

Matthew kindly brought in several of his latest products for the Transition Year students to sample, Nibbly Wibbly’s, corn baked snacks and Air-Dried steaks, lean beef slices, to mention but a few!

The students thoroughly enjoyed his inspiring talk, and we in Skibbereen Community School wish Matthew ever success in the future with his thriving business.

TY Farming & Sustainability Trip

On Thursday 9th May, TY Students visited Carbery Farm Zero C in Shinagh with a view to understanding how these initiatives link to TY courses in Farming, Sustainability and Agricultural Science.

Afterwards students went on a Nature Walk in Bandon Woods with former teacher Mr. John Dullea, who very kindly gave up his free time to come and meet us! We discussed materials that link to TY courses in Farming, Sustainability and Agricultural Science.

Carbery have a world first project for agriculture where they are working to create an economically viable, climate neutral dairy farm by targeting several areas:

· Using clover and multi-species swards to capture carbon within the soil, produce more resilient grass, improve productivity and reduce fertiliser use.

· Trialling different types of diet that change animal digestion, reducing the amount of methane emitted by cows.

· Maintaining and improving biodiversity on the farm and harnessing the natural ecosystem to reduce the reliance on pesticides and fertiliser.

· Sourcing renewable energy where possible to reduce the farm’s reliance on carbon-emitting fossil fuels.

The aim is that this model could be adapted and used in farms across the country.

Students noted the following:

We learned that Carbery sources its milk from Drinagh, Lisavaird, Bandon and Barryroe Co-ops and as a result, all suppliers are effectively shareholders at Farm Zero C. We learned that codes on dairy products such as “1867” and “1431” indicate that the milk has been supplied by West Cork farms. This helps consumers to support local farmers when choosing own-brand products.

We also learned that policy and financial incentives are essential to help farmers reduce emissions. In terms of biodiversity, from January onwards famers will be able to claim payments for scrubland whereas up to now they were penalised.

We learned that they fenced off ground where it was too wet for farm machinery so they created wet lands in a field that was too wet for machinery to travel.

In Bandon Woods, Mr Dullea spoke about the natural habitat and how important grass, trees and plants are in the area.

Students noted the following:

We learned that barley oats and maize are all grass plants and that lime comes from fish and that if a tree falls to the ground over time it will start sprouting again. Blackberries are a compound fruit. The main focus that we were discussing is how important that grass is not only for animals but for people as well

We would like to thank Mary-Kate, Paddy and Isla at Carbery for their very warm welcome and for sharing their expertise and experience with us. We would also like to thank Mr. Dullea for meeting us in Bandon Woods and sharing his wisdom with us. Thanks also to all the students and Ms. Burke.

We had a great day out!
