Fairtrade Talk for 2nd Years

Class 2D were visited by Kay Quinn, one of the members of Skibbereen Fairtrade Town who gave them a talk on the importance of Fairtrade and her experience in Costa Rica working with Fairtrade farmers. She also gave the students useful advice on how they can help our school get a Fairtrade badge.


Class 2D are currently trying to get a Fairtrade badge for our school in order to show how our school contributes to making the world a better place.

A Big thanks to Kay for visiting the students. It was very informative and very much appreciated.

Boston Exchange Visitors - Day 5 March 14th

Day 5 was again another action packed day.

It started out with a trip to Lough Hyne on Long’s coaches with Mr. Sean Hurley. Mr. Tom Foley gave a speech about Lough Hyne and gave a guided tour up the hill where they were met with panoramic views of West Cork. Ms. Alise Bride acted as another tour guide for an alternative route along the lake.

It was off to Baltimore next where they had lunch. Some had toasted specials in Bushe’s Bar in Baltimore whilst others opted for ice cream after a packed lunch.

After lunch they travelled to Liss Ard for a guided tour of the Irish Sky Gardens, by Paul Carlos.

Skibbereen Community School are very appreciative of Liss Ard and their manager Alexi Argyris for organising this special event. The smiles in the pictures say it all!

Seachtain Na Gaeilge

UCC Information Evening For Parents/Guardians

Information Evening on Tuesday, 21 March from 6pm to 7.30pm in the Aula Maxima, Main Quadrangle, UCC.

Help students choose the right course and college option for them. 


UCC are running an Information Evening on Tuesday, 21 March from 6pm to 7.30pm in the Aula Maxima, Main Quadrangle (building 59 on the UCC campus map).

This event is specifically for parents, guardians, and supporters of senior cycle students, to provide an overview and helpful insights into academic and student life at University College Cork. The evening will include short practical talks on how to prepare your sons and daughters for the transition to third level, information on finance and grants, and expert advice on degree choices and how they align with future careers.


With over 60 undergraduate degrees on offer, staff from the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, College of Business and Law, College of Science, Engineering and Food Science and College of Medicine and Health will be available to answer your questions. There will also be an opportunity to chat with staff from our Disability Support (DARE), UCC Career Services, the Graduate Attributes Programme, the UCC Skills Centre and the Quercus Scholarship Programme.

Class 1D Trip to Skibbereen Library

1D have all become members of Cork County Council Library and Libraries Ireland! We visited Skibbereen Library on Thursday 09 March where we were warmly welcome by all the library staff.  

The library service is free of charge and up to 12 books can be borrowed at any one time. The library also provides a space to conduct research, print project work etc. Students were shown how to borrow and return books and learned how to request and reserve titles from other branches. Books can be borrowed from and returned to any branch nationally.  

Members can also access ebooks and audio books free of charge. It is possible to read daily newspapers and magazines for free, send documents for printing remotely, book a PC, borrow or return a book in any library in the country, access language learning programmes and much, much more! In fact, you can even borrow a musical instrument from your local library!  

Many thanks to Mary, Veronica and Gina in Skibbereen Library, and to teachers, Ms O’ Sullivan and Ms Burke for facilitating the visit.  

We have also included some photos of students acting out various scenes from the drama, Burning Everest. Well done to all involved! 

Boston Exchange Visitors, Day 4, March 13th.

Our visitors went to see the birthplace of Michael Collins yesterday. They then had a tour of the Michael Collins House in Clonakilty. This was followed by a visit to Castlefreake Castle where Kevin the foreman gave a fantastic tour of the ongoing restoration work. This was followed by a visit to the Galley Head Lighthouse, where former Lighthousekeeper, Mr. Ger Butler gave an excellent talk. The school would like to sincerely thank, Jamie and Sean in the Michael Collins Centre, Kevin in Castlefreake and Ger in the GalleyHead for their time.

First Year Boys Basketball

Congratulations to our first year boys basketball team who are through to the county ‘A’ grade final, after beating Ballincollig Community School yesterday.

After a sluggish start, the SCS boys found their rhythm and recorded a comfortable victory of 45 to 21 points. Thanks to coaches Ms. Marie O'Mahony and Ms. Mags Breen. 

4th Year Agricultural Science Trip

4th year Agricultural Science students went to Clonakilty Agricultural College today to learn about beef breeds and genetics.

The students were given a guided tour around the farm, where they saw new born lambs and calves.

Thank you to John Dullea, teacher from Darrara college for showing us around and giving us a detailed talk. 

Boston Exchange Visitors - Day 3

Absolutely fantastic is one way of describing day 3 of our Boston exchange. It was an action packed day.

We set off from O’Donovan Rossa GAA grounds at 12.45 to see the Cork and Wexford hurling match. It was wins all around today for Cork, winning the match & recruiting life long extra supporters for Cork Hurling. Liz and Dave Grindle and Siobhan Hunter and Christine Walsh all commented that it was great to see such a fast, paced exciting game!

Next stop was a scenic walk to Marina Market for pizza, which was organised by Mr. Anton O’ Mahony and Mr. Tom Foley.

Our sincere thanks to Mike Scannell and O’ Donovan Rossa for organising this wonderful day out and to Sean Hurley for driving with Long’s Coaches. Thanks also to Ms. Olivia Scarlett and Sophie Scarlett and Mr. Sean Hickey for accompanying.

Boston Exchange Visitors - Day 2

We were delighted to host a formal reception in Skibbereen Community School for our Boston Exchange visitors at 2pm on Saturday.

Mr. Tom Foley opened proceedings and our Principal Mr. Anton O’ Mahony welcomed everyone to our reception. Mr. and Mrs. Dave and Liz Grindle, Ms. Siobhan Hunter and Ms. Christine Walsh and 14 students were welcomed. Councillor Karen Coakley gave a few words of welcome.

All students were handed a gift bag each by Ms. Rita O’Connell and Mr. Anton O’Mahony. Our very talented students played Irish traditional music and gave a display of Irish dancing organised by Ms. Colette Brennan.

We were delighted to have Ms. Mary Hegarty, Ms. Helen Dempsey, Ms. Ruth O’Brien, Fr. John Heinhold, Mr. Paul Hayes, Ms. Anne Crowley, Ms. Sandy Gallagher, Mr. Michael Collins TD, Mr. Joe Carroll, Mr. Mike Scannell, Ms. Sandra Flynn and host families.

The students enjoyed a trip to the musical ‘Hi School Musical’ later in the evening in what was a perfect end to a perfect day!

6th Year Time Out Tea Break, March 9th

Leaving Certs took a Time Out Tea Break during RE class today to recharge for the weeks ahead. Many thanks to the RE Dept. and Student Support Team and many thanks to the Canteen Team for all their support!

Welcome to our American Students & Teachers from Boston

We in Skibbereen Community School are so excited to host our American students & teachers from Boston.

After an early start, Ms. Orla O’Sullivan and Mr. Cormac O’ Brien travelled to Dublin Airport with Des Hennessy and Ken O’Dea of Long’s Coaches. 15 students arrived with Ms. Liz Grindle and Mr. Dave Grindle.

After having a delicious breakfast in the Crown Plaza, they were given a guided tour of The Phoenix Park including The American Ambassador’s Residence and Áras an Uachtaráin.

A guided tour of Government Buildings was booked and just like The Book of Kells, was extremely informative. Local TD Christopher O’ Sullivan met the group there and escorted them on their tour.

Interestingly our Boston teacher met a former retired colleague in Trinity College, really showing it is “a small world”.

Dublin was beautiful and after a short break, it was off to Skibbereen where the excitement kept building.

Despite the tiredness and weather, a wonderful first day was had by all and the wonderful West Cork delights await our new Boston friends, who we know are in for a great treat!


Junior Ladies Soccer Team, March 9th

Congratulations to our Junior Ladies Soccer Team and their coaches, Ms. Orla Higgins and Mr. Ger Carey on beating Presentation Bandon today in the Cup.

St. Patrick's Day Banner

We are so excited to be leading the parade this year with our American students from Boston.

Preparations have now been finished after months of organising. We are so looking forward to a fun filled week with them next week!

TY Musical Performance

Skibbereen Community School were delighted to have all local primary schools in to see the matinee performance of ‘Hi School Musical’ by our transition year students.  

We hope they enjoyed the event and wish the cast and crew the very best for their upcoming performances on the 9th, 10th and 11th of March.
