To Incoming First Years 2020

We know you must have lots of questions about your new school. Just remember feelings of apprehension as well as excitement are very natural as you begin secondary school.  So, to help you with this, we have collected some resources that you and your parents/guardians can look at over the next few days.

It is useful to know that for your first day on Tuesday 1st September, you will need a pen, copybook, a bottle of water and some lunch. You don't need to bring any of your textbooks as the day will be more about you becoming familiar with how Skibbereen Community School works!

We are really looking forward to meeting you in person soon and answering any queries you might have.

4th Year Student sets up his own Food Business - Fastnet Foods

TimODriscoll-0001.jpg

The Home Economics Department and School Community are delighted to share some exciting news at the end of what has been an unusual term for all of us.

Transition Year student, Tim O’Driscoll has launched his own food business which creates simple and easy to make baking mixes that produce delicious results. Tim has launched six products. Our favourite is the brown bread, delicious and so easy to make. Tim sells his products online, in local supermarkets Fields and Drinagh, as well as in other supermarkets across the county.

This is the good news story we all needed to hear and we would like to congratulate Tim on the launch of Fastnet Foods and wish him continued success.  So get liking, sharing and baking everyone and get behind this local business.

National Student Enterprise Programme Virtual Finals. May 27th.

Mini Company win 2020.jpg

There was a record number of 85 student enterprises competing in Ireland’s largest entrepreneurship programme for second level students.  The standard of projects was immense as reported by the host 'Rick O'Shea'.  While the students of SCS were very unlucky not to feature in the overall awards with their creative and imaginative 'Boat Bright' idea, the school is very proud of their achievements in reaching the National Finals having won the regional competition.  CBS Thurles won the overall award.  Well done to all involved particularly their teacher and mentor Ms. Mary O'Donovan, Business Dept.

Tips for Parents and Students on doing Online Assessments.

online assessments.jpg

GUIDE FOR DOING ONLINE ASSESSMENTS

  • Make sure your computer/device is fully charged and not about to apply updates.

  • Find a quiet space to work.

  • Turn off the wifi in other devices in the home if possible.

  • Have a pen and paper to hand.

  • Read exam instructions and each question carefully.

  • Watch your time as many exams will shut you out after the exam deadline.

  • Leave enough time to photograph your written answers and upload them if required.

  • Double check and triple check your answers before clicking the submit button. You cannot resubmit!

  • Photograph the questions or screen shot the questions if your device starts to freeze you out. If you cannot upload your answers, photograph them and email them to your teacher within an acceptable time of the exam finishing.

  •  Do not leave the exam page during the assessment as you may lose all your work.

  •  For 1st, 2nd and 3rd years, if reading the question is a challenge for you, click on the immersive reader icon beside each question and the question will be read to you.

  •  Reading assistance is provided for some 5th year students via the Speech Synthesis icon. These students have been informed re this facility.

  •  Contact your teacher immediately by email if you encounter a problem and send them a screen shot of the issue if you can.

  •  Make sure you attempt all questions independently. We advise that you do not refer to your notes during the course of the examination.

  • Best of luck!
