Digital Drop-In workshop #6

This week was the final Digital-Drop In workshop of the pilot series.

Over a total of six workshops, older adult participants have engaged with volunteer mentors from TY to exchange and develop digital skills across a variety of digital devices and applications.

Whether a novice or an improver, the one-to-one learning exchange meant that participants truly engaged in the principles of intergenerational learning: learning from one another, learning with one another, learning about one another.

A nice close out was the presentation of certificates of participation by mentors to their learners.

Well done to everyone involved and we look forward to developing a library of resources from the content we covered to share more widely in the spring.

Many thanks to Mr. Anton O’ Mahony, Mr Conor Uhl, Ms Orla O’Sullivan for organising and Dr. Sandra Flynn for facilitating.

History and Sustainability Visit to Skibbereen Heritage Centre and Lough Hyne

On Thursday, Green Schools Committee members along with TY History and Sustainability students and their teachers, Ms O’Brien and Ms. Burke, visited Skibbereen Heritage Centre and Lough Hyne.

TY students organised the trip as they were keen to learn why Lough Hyne was Europe’s first designated marine reserve and why it is the most studied body of water of its size in the world! Recent media coverage has brought our attention to Lough Hyne as a rich but also fragile ecosystem which needs to be protected. Skibbereen Heritage Centre has a fascinating Lough Hyne section as well as an extensive Famine Exhibition.

Ms. Terri Kearney warmly welcomed us at the Heritage Centre and gave us an incredibly interesting and engaging tour. Students learned about the researchers and the various habitats in Lough Hyne such as the Rapids, Whirlpool Cliff, the Western Trough and Barloge Creek. Ms Kearney brought history alive when describing the causes and devastating effects of the famine in our local area. It was interesting to note the crucial role that policy played in food distribution and how this is still very relevant in the world today.

From the Heritage Centre we travelled to Lough Hyne to enjoy its beauty for ourselves, and we picnicked and hiked to Barloge Creek. We also met Mr. Rory Jackson who runs the Oceans Plastic Project and facilitates the Cycle Sense bike upcycling project. Students are keen to participate in both of these initiatives in the future.

United Nations Youth Delegates visit SCS

On Monday 20 November, Ireland’s two United Nations Youth Delegates, Alicia O’Sullivan and Mohammad Naeem came to SCS to talk to students about their role in the United Nations, the Sustainable Development Goals and many other social and climate issues.

TY, Fifth Year and Green Schools Committee students attended. Alicia and Mohammad were very open and answered all the questions the students had. They also gave a presentation on their trip to New York City where they spoke to the UN General Assembly about issues concerning young people.

Alicia is a past pupil of SCS and we really enjoyed welcoming her back to her old school!

Thanks to Ms Burke, Ms McNulty & Mr Uhl for organising the event and especially to Mohammad and Alicia for taking the time to come and talk to us.
