Schools Athletics Tailteann Games, June 24th

Athletics Ireland Schools' Tailteann (Interprovincial) Games were held in Carlow on Saturday last, June 24th. This event is a historical one, with a long tradition and is for the Intermediate grade (u17) only. The top three athletes in each event, from the 4 provinces compete against each other for three medals. The top two athletes in each event are also be rewarded with international selection for the Schools Track and Field (SIAB),held annually.

The three SCS athletes who had qualified all performed tremendously, despite the strong wind that made running and throwing difficult for all.

Diana Coakley finished in 5th place with a best throw of  36.23m  in the hammer(3kg) competition. This was a PB and a superb throw especially considering she is eligible again next year.

Katie Kingston continued her impressive form in the Javelin (500g) competition. Katie's best on the day was a brilliant 39.15m  but unfortunately  just shy of the bronze medal on this occasion, finishing in a very creditable 4th place.

Caoimhe Flannery continued her unbeaten run this year by winning the 1500m Steeplechase title, in her second best time this year,5 :12.

Caoimhe has now been selected to represent Ireland in the Schools International Track and Field at Grangemouth, Scotland on July 15th, where she will run again athletes from England, Scotland and Wales.

Best of luck to our Leaving Certs and Junior Certs tomorrow!
