Gold Medal John Paul II Awards

Four former SCS students recently received Gold Medal, John Paul II Awards.

The John Paul II awards are faith achievement awards given to young people who volunteer their time to actively participate in the life of their Church, their community, and their society.

The four girls planted a tree to mark their achievements.

First Day for our new First Years, August 29th 2022

The School Community were delighted to welcome our incoming First Years today for the start of their induction programme. We wish them every success as they start a new chapter on their educational journey.

Tailteann Athletics Games, Tullamore, June 25th

SCS students, Caoimhe and Katie represented "Munster Schools ", at the Athletics  Interprovincial u17 Tailteann Games, at Tullamore last Saturday. 

Both girls won bronze medals ;Caoimhe  was 3rd in the 1500m Steeplechase and Katie was 3rd in the Javelin and 4th in the Discus.The Munster Girls' team finished a very close 2nd overall to Leinster ,who were awarded the Tailteann cup,with Ulster 3rd and Connacht 4th.

 Both Katie and Caoimhe are eligible for the Intermediate (u17) grade again next year.

All Ireland Schools Track and Field, Tullamore, June 4th

With over 1,000 students,  all  who had qualified through the provinces, from 370 schools all over Ireland , the 4 Skibbereen Community School students performed brilliantly  at Tullamore last Saturday,and remarkably  all returned home with a medal.

Diana Coakley got the day off to a fantastic start throwing brilliantly to secure the gold in the Junior Discus .Adam O Donovan, was in superb form also and his throws in both the javelin and shot earned him 2 silver medals  in the Junior Category.Katie Kingston followed on with some fantastic throws in the Discus to claim the bronze in the Intermediate girls' Discus. To round off a memorable day,Caoimhe Flannery ,after an early fall battled bravely to finish 3rd in ths Intermediate 1500m Steeplechase. 

Katie and Caoimhe will now represent Munter in the Tailteann Games,(an interprovincial competition for the first 3 finishers in each Intermediate event in the Provinces),in Tullamore on Friday June 24th. Both girls will be underage again next year.

School Pool Tournament Winner For 2021/2022

Congratulations to Fiachra, 6th Year who won the inaugural School Pool Tournament. He won a trophy, €50 in prize money and the title of being the best pool player in SCS. 64 students and staff entered the competition in Feb and it ended with Fiachra and Liam McCarthy, 5th year in the final. Well done to both lads for a great final and well done to all who bravely entered. Many thanks to Skibb Fire Service for donating a second table for next year.

Congratulations to Brian and Vlad and their Art Teacher Ms. Susan O Regan on winning a Special Merit Award in this year’s National Texaco Children’s Art Competition. This is a huge achievement for both the lads and our school. Well done to all involved!

TY Upcycling with Cycle Sense and the Ocean Plastics Project.

TY Graduation, May 25th 2022

Our TY students graduated today. A lovely ceremony was held to acknowledge and celebrate every student’s achievements during the Year. Each student was presented with their portfolio which contained all their certificates which varied from Driver Theory Education to Culinary skills to Digital Media. Speakers recalled the memorable events of the year such as the School Musical, Mentoring Programme, Work Experience, School Sporting Blitz’s, Ocean Plastics Project, Charitable events for Simon and Ukraine, Christmas Food Market, I Wish STEM programme and the BT Young Scientist to name a number.

Awards were also presented to a number students for their contribution to TY.

    The School Community wish to thank all the TY teachers and Module Instructors for their efforts this year. They provided the students with huge opportunities. We would especially like to thank Ms. Gretta Burchill, TY Coordinator and Ms. Karen Sheane, TY Year Head for their trojan work each day in ensuring that the programme ran smoothly. We would also like to thank the office staff of Ms. Mary kelleher Fowler, Ms. Margaret Maloney and Ms. Ciara Walsh for handling the logistics of the programme. Thanks also to the BAM team .

Munster Schools Athletic Championships, May 21st.

On May 21st, Second Years Ciara Delaney, Katie Kingston, Diana Coakley, Adam O Donovan, Caoimhe Flannery and first Year Elaine o Sullivan represented our school at the Munster Schools Athletic Championships in Templemore.

SCS has 3  new Munster Champions;

Adam O'Donovan,Katie Kingston and Caoimhe Flannery ,(all 2nd years),one 3rd place and all six athletes finished in the top 7.

Adam was 1st in Junior Shot and Javelin,Katie was first in Intermediate Discus and Javelin and Caoimhe was 1st in the Intermediate 1500m Steeplechase.

Diana Coakley(2nd year) was 3rd in the Junior Discus,Elaine OSullivan (1st year),was 5th in Javelin and 5th in Discus and Ciara Delaney was7th in the 800m.

With the top 3 to qualify for the All Ireland Schools track and field ,Adam,Katie ,Caoimhe and Diana will proceed to Tullamore on Sat June 4th.

Well done to all who competed and represented our school so well. Well done also to Skibb Athletics Club.

Cork Bike Week Cycle to Tragumna

On Friday 20th of May, nineteen students took part in a one hour cycle skills training with Cycle Sense. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Cycle Sense accompanied the students and Ms. Orla O’Sullivan, Mr. Patrick Harrington, Ms. Martina McCarthy, Mr. Chris O’Brien, Tomás O’Donnabháin and Sean O’Driscoll to Tragumna and back to SCS.

The school is very thankful to Liss Ard Estate for opening all of their gates to ensure the safety of the cyclists. Everyone was delighted with Liss Ard Estate and Tragumna Beach. There can be no doubt about it that we live in a wonderful area.

Every effort has been made to promote cycling, cycling to school and cycle safety. This intitiatve was made possible by The Green School’s Committee, Cork Bike Week, Cork Sports Partnership, BAM, Liss Ard and Cycle Sense.

Cork Bike Week Film

SCS was delighted to take part in Cork Bike Week.

On Tuesday 17th May, the Green School’s Committee, second year students, Ms. Orla O’Sullivan and the Green School Liaison Co-ordinator Ms. Catherine Russell watched ‘Together We Cycle and She Cycles’ and various other films promoting cycling.

Catherine Russell provided refreshments. Every effort was made to promote cycling, to encourage cycling to school and to encourage more females into cycling. A great time was had by all!

1st Year School Trip to Lagoon Activity Centre with TY Mentors

On Thursday, Ms. Wilson and the TY mentors organised a school trip for first year pupils to the Lagoon Activity Centre in Rosscarbery, followed by a visit to the beach.

The sun shone all day and it was a wonderful day of activities and sports for the students- topped off with some delicious pizza!

Many thanks to the accompanying teachers/staff who ensured the day ran smoothly.

Our School Community celebrated the graduation of our Leaving certs yesterday, May 19th. It was a special day for our students, their families and the school staff.

This year group are the first to complete their six years in SCS and we are very proud of them. Everyone wishes them every success in the upcoming exams and in all their future endeavours.

We wish to thank all those who made yesterday such a special occasion, Ms. Rosie O Brien, School Chaplain, Mr. Dullea, Year Head, Ms. Colette Brennan and the choir/musicians, Ms. Hoskins and the Art Dept, 6th Year committee, The Home Ec. Well done to our Junior Ladies Football Team and their coaches Ms. Ella Ryan, Ms. Anna Ward and Mr. Ger Carey on winning the Cork PPS Junior A Final today in Bandon. They beat St. Mary’s of Midleton by 2-13 to 2-04. Many thanks to all the players, mentors, school staff, travelling supporters, local clubs, parents and sponsors for all their support this year. BT Young Scientists

Good luck to our BT young scientist finalists Mark Keating and Ava Minihane  who are invited to present their project  titled ‘Eyes Vs Ears; Testing Visual Reactions Vs Aural Reactions in Teenagers’ to the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences at the University of Limerick on Thursday 19th May 2022. 

The students will have an opportunity to share their project with experts in the fields of sport, sport science, physical activity, physical education, and health.

Soccer Medal Presentation to the U15 Boys Soccer Team from 2017

At the Leaving Cert’s Final Assembly today, the team who came runners up in the U15 Cork Cup in 2017 were presented with their medals by their former assistant coach, Mr. Sean Spencer. The students paid tribute to their former Soccer Coach and Maths teacher, Mr. John McCarthy who sadly passed away in 2018.
