Skibb v (Scoil Mhuire gan Smál) Blarney: Result 4-1
Match Report
Skibb’s Junior League Girls’ Soccer team had another impressive victory at home in Skibb at 11a.m. on Monday January 27th. This was in fact a tighter match for most of the game than the victory on the previous Thursday but in the end Skibb ran out victors on a scoreline of 4-1.
Skibb started well and within the first few minutes Muireann O’Donnell had scored in a goal-line scramble to put us ahead. Blarney however settled after this and probably had the better of the rest of the first half. The Skibb defence (Ciara Dennehy in goal, Ashleigh Handy, Leah Carey, Kathlyn McCarthy and Louise Keohane) were very solid in keeping the Blarney forwards and midfields at bay and despite Blarney’s efforts it ended 1-0 at half-time.
In the second half it was a very even affair for the first 20 minutes with both attacks having good chances and both defences standing solid. However the second-half stalemate was broken by a well-taken goal from Hannah Sheehy who dribbled in at speed from the wing and hit the ball cleanly into the corner.
The old adage that the 5 minutes after you score is the most dangerous time in a match was proved again however when Blarney hit back with a goal of their own after some good play in their midfield but a very unusual (one-off) dip in concentration from the Skibb back-line. With 10 minutes to go it was still 2-1 and the sideline was a nervous one with both teams having their chances only to be denied by good play at the back. It was a great relief to all concerned when Maebh Collins (who’d had an excellent game in centre midfield) rounded a couple of players on her way into the box and put the ball away into the corner, giving the goalie no chance. A couple of minutes later after a poor kickout Maebh scored again and that essentially ended the match as a contest.
Overall this was a very competitive match. The scoreline of 4-1 may have slightly flattered Skibb considering how close the match was for the majority of the game but Skibb were certainly deserved the win.
