Congratulations to our Junior Ladies Soccer Team and their coaches, Ms. Orla Higgins and Mr. Ger Carey on beating St.Colmans of Midleton at home today by 2 goals to nil. This was a league win and a great result having lost to the same team last week in the Cup.

Skibb v (St. Colman’s) Midleton Girls’ Soccer: Match Report

Skibb took on St. Colman’s College Midleton in their first Junior League Girls’ Soccer match at home in Skibb at 11:30 on Thursday January 22nd.

The Skibb team consisted of a mixture of 3rd years, 2nd years and many 1st years, this being the first year the school has had a girls’ soccer team. The training the girls put in since September under the tutelage of  Mr. Ger Carey (assisted by Ms Higgins and Ms Murphy) paid off with an impressive 2-0 win.

Skibb started well with a nice passing move up front, a cross into the box from Maebh Collins to Hannah Sheehy, leading to a good goal into the corner from Hannah shortly after the 10-minute mark. Midleton were well in the game however and the back four of Skibb dealt well with attacks lead by a particularly speedy centre forward. The first half overall was a pretty even affair but Skibb came off at half time with a 1-0 lead.

The second half was also a well-contested affair with attacks from both sides generally being dealt with ably by the respective backlines. It wasn’t till 7 minutes from the end that Skibb managed to break the deadlock in this half and consolidate the win with a second goal. After a period of sustained pressure a kickout fell to Maebh Collins who dribbled the ball back into the box ahead of her markers and struck the ball into the bottom left of the goal, giving the goalie no chance on this occasion.

Although Midleton kept on trying there was no way back into the game for them and overall Skibbereen were well worth their win. This was a particularly satisfying victory given that Midleton had knocked Skibb out of the Minor Cup in an away fixture in the first week of January on a scoreline of 3-1. That match had been Skibb’s first ever competitive match and the experience gained during that match stood the girls in good stead for the subsequent victory in the Junior League.

There are 2 more upcoming fixtures for the girls (both home matches): Junior League on Monday 27th January and 1st Year Cup on Friday 31st January. Good luck to the girls in both!
