Skibb v Kinsale Community College: Result 6-0

Match Report

Skibb’s First Year Girls’ Soccer team had their first outing at home in Skibb at 11.30a.m. on Friday January 31st. The final result was a 6-0 victory for Skibb after a great performance from all the girls who are now looking forward to a Cup Semi-final against either Newport or Killarney.

As this was a Cup match Skibb needed to be on their toes from the start and thankfully they were. Within the first 2 minutes Abby Caverly had thumped in a goal for Skibb. Despite a strong wind against them Skibb had much the better of the first half with 2 more goals before half-time. The first of these was from Lucy McCarthy pouncing on the rebound from a Maebh Collins shot and then Maebh Collins got the next goal herself. The few chances that Kinsale got in the first half were well dealt with by Aishling Ryan in goal and her backline.

Skibb continued on the second half where they left off the first half. Now with the wind at their backs they dominated the game even more as Kinsale struggled to clear their lines on kickout. Five minutes into the second half Maebh Collins scored her second goal, shortly after this Abby Caverly got her second and then finally Maebh finished off her hat-trick.

Overall this was a great team effort with excellent performances from all in midfield, defence and up front. Great credit is due to all the girls who’ve been training hard since September (this is true of both the First Year and Junior teams) and to their coach Mr Ger Carey who has them extremely well-marshalled. Thanks as well to the three first years who joined the team recently to help out and hopefully will stay to play on in the future. They are a great addition to the team. Congrats to all!

Junior Ladies Soccer team beat Scoil Mhuire gan Smal, Jan 27th

Junior ladies Soccer Team Jan 2020.jpg

Congratulations to our Junior Ladies Soccer Team and their coaches Ms. Orla Higgins and Mr. Ger Carey who continued their league winning ways by beating Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal, Blarney by 4 goals to 1. Skibb v (Scoil Mhuire gan Smál) Blarney: Result 4-1

Match Report

Skibb’s Junior League Girls’ Soccer team had another impressive victory at home in Skibb at 11a.m. on Monday January 27th. This was in fact a tighter match for most of the game than the victory on the previous Thursday but in the end Skibb ran out victors on a scoreline of 4-1.

Skibb started well and within the first few minutes Muireann O’Donnell had scored in a goal-line scramble to put us ahead. Blarney however settled after this and probably had the better of the rest of the first half. The Skibb defence (Ciara Dennehy in goal, Ashleigh Handy, Leah Carey, Kathlyn McCarthy and Louise Keohane) were very solid in keeping the Blarney forwards and midfields at bay and despite Blarney’s efforts it ended 1-0 at half-time.

In the second half it was a very even affair for the first 20 minutes with both attacks having good chances and both defences standing solid. However the second-half stalemate was broken by a well-taken goal from Hannah Sheehy who dribbled in at speed from the wing and hit the ball cleanly into the corner.

The old adage that the 5 minutes after you score is the most dangerous time in a match was proved again however when Blarney hit back with a goal of their own after some good play in their midfield but a very unusual (one-off) dip in concentration from the Skibb back-line. With 10 minutes to go it was still 2-1 and the sideline was a nervous one with both teams having their chances only to be denied by good play at the back. It was a great relief to all concerned when Maebh Collins (who’d had an excellent game in centre midfield) rounded a couple of players on her way into the box and put the ball away into the corner, giving the goalie no chance. A couple of minutes later after a poor kickout Maebh scored again and that essentially ended the match as a contest.

Overall this was a very competitive match. The scoreline of 4-1 may have slightly flattered Skibb considering how close the match was for the majority of the game but Skibb were certainly deserved the win.

Junior Ladies Soccer Team beat Midleton today, Jan 23rd.

Junior ladies Soccer Team Jan 2020.jpg

Congratulations to our Junior Ladies Soccer Team and their coaches, Ms. Orla Higgins and Mr. Ger Carey on beating St.Colmans of Midleton at home today by 2 goals to nil. This was a league win and a great result having lost to the same team last week in the Cup.

Skibb v (St. Colman’s) Midleton Girls’ Soccer: Match Report

Skibb took on St. Colman’s College Midleton in their first Junior League Girls’ Soccer match at home in Skibb at 11:30 on Thursday January 22nd.

The Skibb team consisted of a mixture of 3rd years, 2nd years and many 1st years, this being the first year the school has had a girls’ soccer team. The training the girls put in since September under the tutelage of  Mr. Ger Carey (assisted by Ms Higgins and Ms Murphy) paid off with an impressive 2-0 win.

Skibb started well with a nice passing move up front, a cross into the box from Maebh Collins to Hannah Sheehy, leading to a good goal into the corner from Hannah shortly after the 10-minute mark. Midleton were well in the game however and the back four of Skibb dealt well with attacks lead by a particularly speedy centre forward. The first half overall was a pretty even affair but Skibb came off at half time with a 1-0 lead.

The second half was also a well-contested affair with attacks from both sides generally being dealt with ably by the respective backlines. It wasn’t till 7 minutes from the end that Skibb managed to break the deadlock in this half and consolidate the win with a second goal. After a period of sustained pressure a kickout fell to Maebh Collins who dribbled the ball back into the box ahead of her markers and struck the ball into the bottom left of the goal, giving the goalie no chance on this occasion.

Although Midleton kept on trying there was no way back into the game for them and overall Skibbereen were well worth their win. This was a particularly satisfying victory given that Midleton had knocked Skibb out of the Minor Cup in an away fixture in the first week of January on a scoreline of 3-1. That match had been Skibb’s first ever competitive match and the experience gained during that match stood the girls in good stead for the subsequent victory in the Junior League.

There are 2 more upcoming fixtures for the girls (both home matches): Junior League on Monday 27th January and 1st Year Cup on Friday 31st January. Good luck to the girls in both!
